Hi, we’re Chris and Pat Little from Wintersmiths. Over the past four years, we’ve harnessed the power of clear ice to bring cocktails, coldbrews, and cold beverages to a whole new level.
After two successful Kickstarter campaigns, we’re now launching our most ambitious project yet—allowing you to create superior clear ice cubes, spheres, and even more varieties––to get the most out of your delicious drinks.
We don’t think you should settle for cloudy, impure ice that melts quickly, breaks apart, and dilutes your hard-earned drink.
That’s why we created Phantom—the first complete clear ice system for professional bartenders and home mixologists alike.
Phantom creates a bunch of different ice shapes, each of which have specific benefits for your beverage. In total, we’re offering trays for seven clear ice spheres, six clear ice cubes, eight clear Collins spears, and sixteen clear standard cubes with even more additional shape trays to come.
Below is what we are offering through this campaign. For each reward tier, you will be able to pick the tray(s) of your choice! A heads up that pictured throughout the page is the Sphere Tray; scroll down to the Features section for more details on our trays.
- The Collins tray makes 5" tall rectangular spears + crescent shapes.
- The Large Cube tray makes 2" cubes + large prisms.
- The Standard Cube tray makes 1.25" cubes + small prisms.
- The Sphere tray makes 2.36" spheres.
Phantom does much more than provide great shape options. It increases the amount of ice that you can create—so you can serve all your guests at once or save some for your personal after party.
It also includes upgraded double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel, which means improved quality and durability in case there are any slipups.
Finally, Phantom creates more ice per square foot than our other products. After using it, you can store the ice in your freezer and move Phantom back to the freezer to create more ice or store it for later use.
How it works
Phantom is as easy as filling, freezing, twisting, and serving.
1. Fill the stainless steel container with water.
2. Insert shape tray and place it in the freezer.
3. Remove in about 24-30 hours and twist the shape tray out of the container.
4. Serve the ice in your favorite beverage or store it for later.

Getting the best ice for your drink
When crafting an intricate beverage like a cocktail, you wouldn’t overlook the quality or purpose of ingredients like your liquid, garnish, or glass. So why would overlook the quality or purpose of your ice?
While we're talking quality, let’s get nerdy for a minute. Different shapes melt and dilute drinks at different rates—which means the shape of your ice should be influenced by your taste and specific drink. For instance, the surface area to volume ratio of a sphere is less than a cube of the same size. Less surface area means that a sphere will melt much more slowly, providing you with a drink that stays colder longer and is less diluted.
A colder, less diluted drink is ideal for anyone who wants to maintain the flavor—whether it’s an iced coffee or a high-quality bourbon. By the same token, those who like their drinks more watered down could choose several small cubes or crushed ice, which have more surface area to volume and will dilute your drink faster.
Now, enough science. Let's drink.
Our journey began when co-founder Chris Little was traveling for business in Tokyo and stumbled upon a great little tavern called Bar Martha. He ordered a bourbon on the rocks and they delivered it with a perfect single ball of clear ice. In addition to the benefits of an ice ball in keeping a drink colder, longer, and limiting dilution, he was shocked by how much better his drink looked.
But after returning home and searching online, Chris found out that the device that they used cost $1,000 and inconveniently required users to create clear ice blocks separately. He found a few other solutions that could form ice spheres for a fraction of that cost, such as silicone molds, but they weren’t clear. Instead, they were filled with air bubbles and impurities and looked cloudy. Chris and his brother Pat knew there had to be a better way and set out to invent a solution.
Wintersmiths was founded with this mission in 2013. Our first products—The Ice Baller, Ice Chest, and Ice Baller Double were all developed in-house—the first two launching on Kickstarter in the summer of 2013 and 2014 respectively. They were successfully crowdfunded with the help of thousands and thousands of incredible backers! And now, we’re back to bring you the Phantom.
