The GIY Stick. Let Nature self water your pots.
GIY Stick reuses bottles and fabric to make any pot self-watering. No Apps, no batteries, we just mimic Mother Nature's simple physics. We turn any urbanite into an urban farmer. GIY stick ensures you don't over or under water. You can see exactly how much the plant drinks and you can easily refill the bottle through the cap, which also prevents mosquitoes from breeding.
How GIY Stick works
We believe in recycling, so we designed the GIY Stick to use plastic bottles that would otherwise be thrown away. It reuses fabric as a wick to bring water from the bottle into the bottom of the soil through capillary action.
We've used GIY Stick on a variety of plants from thirsty Roses and Tomatoes to dry soil-loving Rosemary and Lavender. Because GIY Stick supplies water to the water roots, the top soil and air breathing roots are dry which helps prevent root rot.
And the best thing is you can see how much water your plant drinks in a day.
Note: Please use a thicker piece of cloth for thirstier plants and avoid heavy clay soils which don't have good drainage.
GIY Stick. Designed to hang off almost any pot.
Made of strong ABS plastic, GIY Stick is designed to support up 5kg of water and be hung off the side of the pot. This way, you can use it even on very tall pots.
GIY Stick is designed to fit almost all household size pots. You can even use it in wooden planter boxes, out in the sun or in the shade.
The GIY Stick can also be used for long troughs. Here's a short video that explains how.
Bringing water to the water roots
The top roots are breathing roots while those at the bottom are the water roots. If the top roots are too wet, the plant drowns or develops root rot. GIY Stick is designed to deliver water to the bottom, keeping the top soil dry, and stops weeds from growing.
Note: Use natural fabrics like cotton and you have to replace them every few months as they decompose. Polyester fabrics from sporting wear or dish washing cloth can be used for much longer. Do not put fertiliser into the bottle as algae will bloom. Instead just apply the fertiliser from the top according to instructions.
What goes into the GIY Stick?
The GIY Stick is a high grade ABS plastic injection moulded product. We have invested in the mould, tooling and the first production run, which costs SGD $35,000. To produce the first production run of GIY Sticks to be shipped worldwide, we would need to raise another SGD $20,000. It will be made by a small local factory run by the Loh family. While it may cost less to outsource to other countries, you're guaranteed the high quality and trust of a Made in Singapore product. At the price of SGD $10 for one excluding shipping, 20% goes to production, 15% to Kickstarter and payment portals, 30% goes to salaries, administrative and web costs, finally we set aside 20% for R&D for the next idea which we have already started work on. So that we continue to Make Concrete Jungles Fertile.
One Kind House
OKH is for kind people who are also one of a kind. People who like growing, cooking and eating their own vegetables, learning old traditions and creating new ones. We'd like One Kind House to be a place where we champion young chefs, artists, inventors, innovators, do-gooders and define what a 21st century kampung should be. Above all, One Kind House is about kindness and building an ecosystem around it. Kindness is karmic.
We will also invite our top backers to come over and host you with Coffee, Workshops and even Dinner.
